Personals, or personal ads, have been around almost as long as newspapers. Personals placing in the local community section or classified ad has long been a resource for singles (and couples) to meet. People who place personals are not desperate (typically) although many feel that placing the ad in the personals section somehow will degrade their self esteem. All it really means is the person is willing to exercise options other than the standard singles bars or non-ad approaches, such as church, to meet their match.
